The Cocle Province
Cocle belongs to what is known as Panama's Central Provinces. It borders with Panama on the East, Colon on the North, Veraguas on the West, Herrera on the South West and the Pacific Ocean on the South. Cocle encompasses almost 7000 square miles and has a population of over 200,000 and is a major producer of salt, sugar and tomato crop .
It is the most visited of the Central Provinces and is developing into a real tourist destination. The capital is the city of Penonom with a population of 16,000.
Its name has its origin some say from the two rivers named Cocle del Norte and Cocle del Sur. The Province begins with Pacific salt flats and gently slopes through sugarcane fields to orchid covered waterfalls and lush mountain peaks that offer spectacular views of both Atlantic and Pacific oceans. You will also find the thumb sized golden frogs, square trees, an extinct volcano and the Republics only RV Park.
This is a land of contrasts and huge natural attractions coupled with an extraordinary culture, folklore and pre-Colombian site of El Cano. Cocle is known for its Carnival, the aquatic parade, and its many festivals including the Tomato festival and the patron saint festival, Areas most visited included the handmade hats of Penonome, the hand rolled cigars of La Pintada, the Church buildings of Nata and La Valles petroglyphs.
